Tip 1
First kit is a gap list, not a catalogue
What's already here from siblings or a jumble sale doesn't belong. Five real gaps beat fifty options.
Tip 2
Stagger sizes instead of buying everything tiny
Mix newborn, 0–3 and 3–6 months. Add the season: a wool suit in August is annoying. If the baby arrives larger, edit what's still free.
Tip 3
Bulky first, consumables after
Pram, crib, carrier at the top, and ask people to reserve them. Muslins can say “more than one welcome”.

Your midwife is the better source
The list isn't a seal of approval or advice on seats and mattresses. It stops three people hunting the same car seat.
